There was no diabetes. These are subtle signals, not a finished disease. The study was conducted in mice; causality in humans has not been proven. It’s too early to translate “grandkids will suffer from soda” to people.
But the logic is unpleasant—and useful. Even “natural” stevia is not neutral for the microbiome. And if part of the effect runs through bacteria and gene regulation, the question is no longer only about the calories in today’s can.
