Since last autumn, Abkhaz school students, under the guidance of experienced tech mentors — students of NSTU and ASU — have been exploring the world of engineering and technical professions, while the most motivated participants worked in groups on their own engineering projects. Recently, at Abkhazian State University, the young inventors presented the results of their work to an esteemed jury.
The winning projects for the future engineers were sensor-controlled robotic hands. Teams of students from the Daur Bigvava School of the Gulrypsh District and Secondary School No. 1 named after K. Chachkhalia of the Tkvarcheli District took first and second place in the competition with projects on this topic. Third place was awarded to the team from Secondary School No. 3 named after F. Ch. Avidzba of the Gudauta District for their project of an autonomous solar-powered device.
Members of the competition committee noted that the participants approached the contest with great responsibility, demonstrating deep knowledge, a researcher’s passion, the talent of inventors, original technical solutions, and a creative approach to problem-solving.
Batál Vadimovich Mushba, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Abkhazia and a member of the jury, emphasized that such educational initiatives not only help stimulate school students’ interest in engineering specialties but also contribute to building a promising talent pool for the country’s key economic sectors.
In addition to the competition, the final day of the first season of the “International Tech Mentorship” project included lectures by NSTU experts on current technological trends, as well as a guided tour of Abkhazian State University. Specialists from ASU’s профильных faculties introduced students to the university’s research facilities and spoke about the broad opportunities available in the country for engineering professionals.
The first year of the project’s implementation in Abkhazia confirmed that it is entirely possible to begin studying engineering while still at school. According to the organizers, Russian-Abkhaz cooperation within the framework of Tech Mentorship will certainly continue so that even more talented Abkhaz youth from different regions of the country can demonstrate their inventiveness and creativity, expand their opportunities, and embark on the path of engineering education.
